Detox Your Sex Life

Is your sex life DOA? Does the thought of being intimate with your partner leave you feeling listless, loveless and wanting to fake a headache? If you answered “yes,” you aren’t alone. Countless couples suffer from the bedroom blahs, but a hot new book called Sex Detox (HarperCollins, 2007) can help revive your love life. New York Times best-selling author Ian Kerner tells LifeScript how taking a break from sex can actually bring couples closer together. Plus, find out how hot – or not – your sex life is…
Sex expert Ian Kerner, Ph.D., knows the ins and outs of intercourse. The therapist and author of She Comes First (Collins, 2004), Be Honest – You’re Not That Into Him Either (ReganBooks, 2005) and DSI – Date Scene Investigation (Collins, 2006) knows that too many couples are plagued by the ultimate intimacy killer: unfulfilling, unrewarding sex lives.

While it might not seem like a catastrophic problem, a lackluster love life can prompt people to search for fulfillment elsewhere. According to Kerner, sex is an expression of the intimacy between couples. Without that connection, the relationship flounders.

“I think it’s natural for couples to get tuned out and turned off,” Kerner says. “People act on those impulses in different ways. A lot of men turn to porn and get further and further detached. A lot of men cheat. Women also cheat. Then there’s emotional infidelity out there. It’s easy to say your sex life sucks and try to fulfill the desires and cravings outside the relationship.”
